Survey: Travellers Show Support for Safety Measures

Latvian airline airBaltic as a member of the Aviation Association of Latvia invited its customers to participate in a study by Oxford Research Baltics about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on travel habits. The results show that 80% of travellers believe that wearing a mask, keeping a distance and washing hands are the most efficient ways to fight the Covid-19 spread.

58% of travellers believe that the electronic survey for people entering the country is an appropriate and a good control measure to track and limit the transmission of the Covid-19. In a response to an open question about safety measures, respondents also indicated that they consider flying safe because of the introduced safety measures during flights.

79% of respondents indicated that they travel less because the border crossing is restricted, continuing only essential travel to maintain business connections and meet family. 54% of travellers admitted that travel restrictions have a major impact on their job.

Martin Gauss, CEO of airBaltic: “Safety and health stands above all. We are doing all in our power to ensure safe travel for our passengers and we value their opinion which helps us to improve. airBaltic has done its homework and is following all the safety and health measures. The airline is continuing to offer various safe and flexible travel opportunities from and to the Baltic States.”

“Our industry is very vital because it connects businesses, people and ideas. According to IATA, Latvian aviation industry, driven by airBaltic, last year exceeded 3% impact to the Latvian GDP, which is a contribution of more than one billion euro per year. According to projections for this year, we see that aviation industry will be responsible for more than 40%  from the total drop in Latvian GDP. We have to make smart decisions now in order to be able to manage the increased demand for travel which will appear once vaccines are available, and we get to the point where it is possible to ease restrictions.”

The survey will help the aviation industry to evaluate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on travelling and make justified decisions for restricting the spread of Covid-19 and stabilizing the industry. The survey was conducted from November 5 till November 13, 2020 collecting answers from more than 780 passengers who travelled from Riga Airport between September 1 and November 5, 2020.
