Lufthansa is celebrating its 25th anniversary of flights between Riga and Germany
On 27 October 2016, Lufthansa Group is celebrating its 25th anniversary of its flight service to Latvia. It was on 27 October 1991 when a Lufthansa jet landed for the first time in Riga - a Boeing 737 flew at that time three times a week from Frankfurt to Riga and then via St. Petersburg back to Germany. Riga was the first capital of the three Baltic States which Lufthansa has chosen for its expansion to Eastern Europe in the 1990s. Lufthansa was the second foreign airline to offer flights from Riga after Scandinavian Airlines (SAS).
During the last 25 years, many things have changed. Today aircrafts of the Airbus A320 family are operating on this Baltic route, offering more capacity on this route with its 14 weekly flights to its biggest hub Frankfurt. With one transit customers from Latvia can choose among over 140 onward connections from Frankfurt.
“Latvia is a very important market to us in the Baltic region in terms of passenger numbers. I am proud that we were one of the first foreign airlines that connected Latvia with Germany and since then had a continuous and successfully growing presence over the last 25 years at Riga airport,” says Gabriel Leupold, Senior Director Sales Nordics & Baltic Countries Lufthansa Group.
Lufthansa Group is very proud of celebrating its 25th anniversary in Riga. It is a very attractive city with many visitors with a lot of history; Riga’s historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Riga has hosted among many other events also Eurovision Song contest (2003), Ice hockey IIHF world championships (2006), European Capital of Culture 2014 and held Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2015. Not only because of these reasons, Riga is a highly demanded travel destination.
Lufthansa offers on its flights a modern and innovative product. Still in 2016 a new digital service will be unveiled: broadband internet that will soon be available also on European flights. Passengers from Riga to Frankfurt will be able to stay connected, watch and surf the internet.
One reason for its constant success is the competitive fares. Currently a return flight to Frankfurt can be booked starting from EUR129 Euros on LH.com
