Riga Airport handled 684 000 passengers in August this year, which is 19 percent more than a year before. According to preliminary data on the Airport's performance, the total number of passengers served during the first eight months of the year reached 4.4 million.
The number of transfer passengers reached 23 percent in August thanks to the wide and attractive range of routes offered by the airlines operating in Riga. In comparison, in August 2022, the proportion of travellers who used Riga as a transfer airport was 16 %, and in 2019 – 33 %. Although the recovery of this passenger segment after the pandemic was significantly affected by the markets lost due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, in general, the number of passengers at Riga Airport is recovering similar to the average at Northern European airports.
Throughout the summer and also in August, the most popular flight routes from Riga with the largest number of aircraft were leisure destinations in Spain, Italy, Israel and Malta. The number of destinations offered during the summer months has been stable – almost 100 flight routes, and at least a third of them are unique among the airports of the Baltic countries.
In August, the Airport served a total of 14 % more flights than last August, – 5 823 passenger, cargo, business aviation and other flights. 411 thousand passengers or 60 % of the total number of passengers flew with the national airline “airBaltic”, while 153 thousand or 22 % chose the Irish low-cost airline "Ryanair" for their flights.
