The "Nordea" Riga Marathon will once again be held in the Latvian capital this May, which has over the past several years gained popularity and increased its prestige globally. This year’s event, which will take place on May 18, will once again gather thousands of runners from all over the world.
As it has been included on the European of Capital of Culture program this year, the "Nordea" Riga Marathon has planned a special new course down Riga’s Brīvības Street this year. All runners participating in the marathon will have the unique opportunity to enjoy Brīvības Street – the city’s main street, and run along from Stabu Street to Old Town via the main symbol of Latvian independence – the Freedom Monument. On May 18, a special cultural, performance and musical program will be organized on Brīvības Street, which will allow both participants and spectators to enjoy Riga from a different angle.
The special "Brīvības Street Culture Kilometer" will feature performances from choirs, singers and well-known djs, as well as performance artists. The event will be very interactive, as the runners themselves will also be involved. The marathon’s main course is also expected to have some "cultural surprises" in store as well.
The main course of this year’s marathon has been changed a bit, but the start and finish line will be the same as before – on the November 11 Riverside Embankment near Riga Castle, and the route will include all the main landmarks runners have always enjoyed along the way.
As in previous years, the marathon will have several distances – the full marathon (42 kilometers), the half-marathon (21 kilometers), as well as the 10-kilometer run and the 5-kilometer run.
Latvia offers visitors a wide range of sporting activities – both for those who like to do sports themselves, as well as those who like to cheer on teams as spectators. High-level hockey, football, basketball and motorsport competitions are held in Latvia throughout the year, which will surely all excite those sports fans visiting Latvia.
