A chance to feel the atmosphere of Midsummer solstice

Celebration of the Latvian pagan holiday Līgo, the year's shortest night, is the most Latvian tradition, and its key features are beer, caraway cheese, dances and Līgo songs by the bonfire until dawn. A special Midsummer Fair will be held on Dome Square to properly prepare for the year's greatest celebration.

Impressive flower bunches and garlands, delicious smoked meat and fish, home made cheese from all Latvian regions will be offered on 22 of June all day long at the Fair in Dome Square.

Cheerful Līgo atmosphere will be accessible to everyone on Dome Square in the heart of the city. Local products and handcraft from all over Latvia will be displayed on long tables and stalls. Light linen clothing and aprons, lace hats and shirts, amber jewelry and wooden spoons - all that is needed for Līgo. Vendors will offer impressive flower bunches full of sweet-scent local flowers and plants, as well as crowns made of oak leaves to be presented to every Jānis, who celebrates his name day at Midsummer Solstice. Latvian traditional cheese made of caraway or other spices, tasty goat cheese, glazed bacon-filled pies, golden honey, freshly-smoked meat, sausages and fish will also be on sale.

And of course there will be beer. Tonnes of beer - for all tastes. No Līgo celebration is possible without beer. Folklore groups and ensembles will teach traditional songs, along with merry dancing all day long.

The Midsummer Fair on Dome Square is a wonderful opportunity to get ready for the year's longest celebration - either in the countryside or downtown Riga on the right bank of the Daugava River.
