It is hard to get used to the fact that lats and santims are no longer
the official currency of Latvia. To keep something symbolically, it is
worth finding new applications for old money.

What cannot be put into circulation, can be held close to one's heart.
Once Latvians made pins from silver 5 lats coins; now they make buttons
from santims. Being a patriotic resident of Ventspils, Liga Reitere
decided to order such buttons. In autumn 2013, the jeweler Andris Grebis
hammered out the first buttons from 10 santims coins as well as
kniepķeni* for folk jackets from one santim coins. The idea of making
this kind of buttons got an incredible response. Around November 18 (Day
of Proclamation of the Republic of Latvia), House of Crafts gift shop
started selling the patriotic button as a souvenir. The demand for it
grew significantly after Latvia adopted the euro.
We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who gave their santims to extend the memory of lats and santims!
