Hanseatic Days in Estonian Towns

Everyone is welcome to visit Hanseatic Days in Pärnu and Tartu, which offer the chance to enjoy Estonian culture through several centuries, in June and July this year.

Pärnu Hanseatic Days are held from 27 to 28 June in the park behind the Tallinn Gate and on the Vallikäär Meadow. The Hanseatic Days of 2008 focus on health and everything associated with health. The organisers say that a health village will be built in Pärnu where people can get advice about how to treat their souls and their bodies. Handmade goods will be offered at the medieval market. Masters demonstrate and apprentices learn how to make things using leather, wool, yarn, rope, cloth, wood, twigs and clay.

On 27 June, guests can visit the yard of Kuursaal where wooden sculptures will be made between noon and 6 pm or they can listen to the medieval music played by travelling musicians by the fountain in front of the building. The VI Pärnu Organ Festival can be enjoyed in the Eliisabet Church at 8 pm and an open air concert will begin in Vallikäär at 9 pm. Night cinema opens its doors in the Kuursaal Bandstand at 11 pm. The entire programme is available at the website www.parnu.ee/uus/index.php?id=418.

The Hanseatic Days of Tartu are held from 18 to 20 July. The festivities have been divided between different towns – River Town, Jaani Town, Children’s and Future Town, Rae Town and Hansamarket, each of which represents a certain era. Medieval times will be reborn in Jaani Town, ancient times in River Town and modern times will dominate around the Town Hall Square. Many musicians and dancers from Tartu and elsewhere will perform at the event and guests of Tartu Hanseatic Days are welcome to join the signers and dancers at the Rae Town concerts. Exiting and educational exhibitions and interesting workshops invite everyone to visit.

Hundreds of merchants, who create the right atmosphere on the annual market, will also travel to Tartu. Hansamarket offers an excellent opportunity to buy interesting and unique products and, like in the old times, trading will once again unite different eras and cultures.
