New Era in the Baltics Cultural Space: Vilnius Begins Construction of the Lithuanian National Concert Hall

The official ceremony on November 18, 2024, marked the beginning of construction for Vilnius' National Concert Hall on Tauras Hill, a prime location offering stunning views of the city center. Set to be finished in 2028, the venue will showcase modern architecture with wooden elements that will seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscaped park. A highlight will be its pipe organ and world-class acoustics.

The Lithuanian National Concert Hall was officially inaugurated on November 18, 2024. The venue is expected to be finished in 2028.

Situated on the historic Tauras Hill, which offers a beautiful view of Vilnius center, the Concert Hall is set to become the most technologically and architecturally advanced cultural venue in the Baltic region, attracting global musical stars and tourists.
"The National Concert Hall will be a place where culture, history, and innovation meet the needs of Vilnius residents and visitors. It will not only serve as a concert venue but also as an open space for the city, promoting creativity and collaboration, and helping to realize Vilnius’s vision as a cultural capital. This project will undoubtedly place the capital on the map of Europe’s most competitive cultural spaces," says Vilnius City Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.

The project will be designed by Spain’s “Arquivio architects,” known for their prize-winning international projects–such as Hayat in Teheran, to cultural spaces, such as Maria Luisa Theater in Spain–as well as theaters, schools, and public spaces in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Created in collaboration with Lithuania’s “Cloud architektai,” this 23,800 m² complex will consist of four buildings connected by an open ground floor and a green corridor.

The grand concert hall will offer 1,600 seats, specifically equipped with a full orchestra pit and a pipe organ. A second hall, accommodating up to 900, will serve performing arts. A third versatile space is designed for conferences, exhibitions, and educational events. The fourth, smaller hall is dedicated to rehearsals.

The world-class acoustics of the hall are being developed in partnership with Japan’s Nagata Acoustics, renowned for its work on acclaimed concert halls worldwide. Their portfolio includes such projects as the renowned Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and prestigious concert halls in Berlin, Paris, Seoul, and other cities. When designing the concert hall, the Nagata Acoustics team used advanced testing methods, including a 1:10 scale wooden model, to optimize sound quality. This focus on acoustics ensures a top quality auditory experience for performances ranging from symphonies to chamber music. The concert hall will also have pipe organs–a feature that will offer the possibility for even more versatile musical performances in the city.

The venue will be surrounded by a landscaped park, featuring outdoor art exhibitions, observation decks with views of Vilnius Old Town, and green spaces integrated into the urban environment. Pedestrian overpasses will connect the area to nearby city districts, and underground parking will accommodate cars and buses.

The project aims to preserve existing trees and will plant 113 new ones alongside 4,500 perennial flowers and 2,500 shrubs. Green roofs and other eco-friendly solutions will blend the venue harmoniously into its natural surroundings, honoring the historical and environmental significance of the Tauras Hill.

Due to its prime location and beautiful views of the city panorama, the Tauras Hill has been used for various purposes throughout different periods. The idea of a concert hall here dates back to the early 20th century, and finally an age-old dream will be realized on the site of the Soviet-era Trade Union Palace.

Innovative cultural landmarks play a key role in attracting international culture enthusiasts and enhancing the identity of a city. A notable example is Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie, which opened in 2017. This iconic building has become a prominent symbol of the city, boosting its global reputation and serving as a hub for cultural events and gatherings.

The Vilnius Concert Hall, with its modern architecture, versatile design, and exceptional acoustics will serve as a landmark venue for the city, hosting world-class events and becoming a cultural hub for the Baltic region and the entire Europe.
