During the European Capital of Culture year, various museums and galleries in Riga will be organizing special exhibitions dedicated to the most precious stone of the Baltic Sea – amber.

Participating in the special "Amber Road in Riga" series of exhibitions will be the "Riga Bourse" art museum, Museum of Decorative Arts and Design, Natural History Museum of Latvia, Pauls Stradiņš Museum of the History of Medicine, as well as the National History Museum of Latvia and the "Putti" art gallery. Each of these museums will present their take of the origins of amber, showing the precious stone in the context of history, identity and practical use.

Not everyone knows that even in the ancient times there were many modern workshops in the territory of Latvia which processed amber. Over many years, archeologists have found large quantities of amber, and now anyone will be able to view these magnificent stones at these exhibitions. The National History Museum holds Latvia’s largest collection of amber samples from the Stone Age to the modern era, where the evolution of amber processing from 4,000 B.C. to the 21st century can be viewed.

Furthermore, from May 23 to August 2, the "Putti" art gallery will host an international contemporary jewelry exhibition called "Amber in Contemporary Art Jewelry". The core idea of the exhibition is to demonstrate the possible range of application of amber in contemporary art jewelry created by professional jewelers.
