Riga Airport Passengers Numbers Drop by 87% in the First Four Months of the Year

In the first months of 2021 – from January to April, 162 908 passengers were handled at Riga Airport. The operational performance data show that in the first four months of 2021, the number of passengers served at Riga Airport dropped by 87%.

April started with a positive trend in terms of the number of passengers served: a total of 55 181 passengers were handled at the Airport this month, which is almost 66% more than in March, when Riga Airport served 33 275 passengers.

This is also a significant increase as compared to the situation in April 2020, when the Airport handled only 3 060 passengers. It should be recalled that international air traffic was almost completely suspended due to national restrictions in the second half of March last year.

As compared to the pre-crisis indicators of 2019, the number of passengers dropped by almost 91% in April, whereas in the first four months of the year the number of passengers served at the Airport has decreased by 92%.

The majority or 69.3% of passengers in the first four months of the year were carried by the national airline airBaltic, 8.3% by the Irish low-cost airline Ryanair and 4.6% by Lufthansa. Transfer passengers accounted for 17% of the total number of passengers during this period.

In April, it was possible to fly from Riga Airport to 48 destinations offered by regular carriers, the most popular of which were Amsterdam, Moscow and Frankfurt. Russian airline Aeroflot and Turkish airline Turkish Airlines resumed flights from Riga Airport last month.

This April, a total of 1 776 flights were handled at Riga Airport. The largest number of flights – 1027 flights – were operated by scheduled passenger carriers, 230 were business aviation flights, while 217 flights were operated by cargo carriers.

A total of 6 025 aircraft took off and landed at the Airport in the first four months of this year, and the number of flights decreased by 76% in 2021 as compared to 2019.

2 155 tonnes of cargo were handled at Riga Airport in April. As compared to April 2019, the volume of cargo has increased by 2%. In the first four months of 2021, as compared to the corresponding period of 2019, the volume of cargo has decreased by 9%, while compared to 2020, an increase of 18% has been recorded.

The impact on the volume of cargo handled at the Airport is still related to the decrease in regular passenger flights, but in the cargo flight segment there is a significant increase – the volume of cargo carried on these flights has increased by 64% as compared to 2019.
