There are about 60 bears in Latvia

A public response helped the Nature Conservation Agency identify the person harassing bears near Lubāns Wetland. The culprit has been caught and proceedings have been started to fine him for disturbing the brown bear that's protected in Latvia and Europe. According to the law, you can be fined 700 euros for deliberately disturbing protected species.

In recent years, bear numbers have been increasing in the Baltics. Therefore, more bears are coming to Latvia, and some are staying. The main reason bears disappeared in the past was hunting. Bear populations are recovering now that hunting is not allowed in Latvia and has been restricted for some time along the Estonian border. According to data, there are approximately 60 bears in Latvia.
