First exhibit in the new Valmiera Museum building

The granite sphere weighs about 100 kilograms and is 33 centimeters in diameter. It pierced the thick walls of Valmiera Castle centuries ago. During archaeological excavations in 2018, the cannonball was discovered after being hidden for hundreds of years. Now it's going in the "de Woldemer" exhibition, which will be open to the public both in the new building above the castle cellars and in the renovated Valmiera Museum.

"Four years have passed. And the moment has come for the builders to hand over the building to the historians for the "de Woldemer" exhibition," says Maija Zālamane, Head of the Project Management Department at Valmiera Municipality.

The new exhibition "de Woldemer", the oldest known name of Valmiera, tells about the town's origins and development. It will start with topics that define Valmiera's identity, like the coat of arms, the Valmiera name, and the Gauja River. After that, visitors can walk through the renovated buildings and learn about Valmiera's history. The exhibition will also tell about Valmiera Castle, which was built as a fortification. We have already brought the heaviest exhibit, a granite sphere, probably turned in the 17th century, which will be placed near the exhibition where it was found during archaeological excavations," says Dāvis Pumpuriņš.

The de Woldemer exhibition will invite visitors to learn about the development of the city in an engaging way. The information will be readable, viewable, audible, and even touchable. Therefore, young and old, as well as tourists, will find it interesting. There will even be a separate stand with things that have been lost in the castle, from a board game dice to a wallet containing coins from the 16th-17th centuries."
