Nature paths in Latvia

Latvia has a countless number of nature paths throughout the country, where people can take walks. Many of the nature paths have special picnic areas, and there are also various objects of interest on these paths, where people can relax and enjoy nature.

The Ragakapa Nature Park is located in a coastal area. The park is unique with its pine-trees, most of which are over 300 years old, and some even reaching 340 years old. The park’s sand-dunes are also one of the highest in Latvia – 18.2 meters high. There are four different nature paths to choose from at the Ragakapa Nature Park, which include viewing platforms, steps, benches and information posters.

The Kemeri National Park is the third largest park in Latvia, and was established in 1997. The park is mostly located in western Latvia’s Kurzeme Province, but some of the park’s eastern areas lie in Vidzeme Province near the coastal resort town of Jurmala, 50 kilometers from Riga. The Kemeri National Park is 38,165 hectares large.

Jurmala has been a popular health resort since the 1700’s, when people began using the abundance of hydrogen-sulfide springs and peat mud in health procedures. The most popular health resorts were located in Kemeri area of Jurmala. In 1838, Czar Nikolai I allocated some land in Kemeri where the first bath house was constructed, thus becoming the year the health resort officially began operating in the town.

The Kemeri National Park was created to preserve the area’s unique nature, as well as to remain a tranquil area for persons visiting the town’s health resorts and spas. The Kemeri National Park is made up of several marshes as well as the Dunieris, Kanieris, Sloka and Valguma lakes. The Great Kemeri Moorland and Ragana Marsh are the biggest marsh areas of the national park.
