Kontinental Ice Hockey League’s All-Star Game in Riga

It is likely that the most important event of the Latvian sports calendar in 2012 will take place on January 21, when Riga will host the annual Kontinental Ice Hockey League (KHL) All-Star Game.

Riga was chosen to host the game by the KHL mostly due to its fantastic fans, as well as to put on a show not only for Latvian, Russian and other regional hockey fans, but hockey lovers from Western Europe as well.

Facing off in this year’s match will be the top players from the KHL’s Western Conference versus the top players from the Eastern Conference. The captain of the Western Conference All-Star Team will be Latvian ice hockey legend and the captain of Latvian ice hockey club Riga "Dinamo" Sandis Ozolins. On the other hand, the captain of the Eastern Conference All-Star Team will be Russian legend Sergei Fedorov, who currently plays for Russian ice hockey club Magnitogorsk "Metallurg". Both vteran players were once NHL All-Stars and have both won the "Stanley Cup" with their respective teams – Ozolins with the Colorado "Avalanche" and Fedorov with the Detroit "Red Wings".

On the other hand, the month of February will be an exciting one for hockey fans in Riga, as the KHL’s regular season winds down. Riga "Dinamo" will play its final four-game home series of the season from February 19 to 26. The regular season will be followed by the KHL’s playoffs in March, and it is very likely that the Latvian club will once again qualify and host exciting playoff games.
