Jūrmala – the first city in Latvia to receive a resort status!

On 19th of November, 2013, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia granted the status of a resort city to a part of Jūrmala’s administrative territory, except Bražciems, Priedaine and Vārnukrogs. Formal acquisition of a resort status will contribute to the attraction of investments for the further development of the infrastructure and will promote health tourism services of Jūrmala in domestic and foreign markets.

Chairman of Jūrmala City Council Gatis Truksnis tells that "We are really pleased that Jūrmala has regained its official health resort status that we have historically had for many years. It is an acknowledgement of many people's successful work and a positive signal to the potential Latvian and foreign investors. Jūrmala pays much attention to the development of a resort and tourism industry, among other things, we have completely abolished resort fee for all accommodations in the city, and in a non-summer season also entrance fee has been canceled from the autumn of this year. Status of the resort city will also serve as a good marketing tool and will further strengthen the faithfulness of tourists to Jūrmala as an attractive tourist destination. We have also anticipated a number of other resort sector support measures in 2014 for Jūrmala to place among the best health resorts as soon as possible."

According to the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia, to obtain a resort status, a number of conditions should be met - within the resort there are natural healing resources, at least one resort's clinic is operating in a territory of a resort, and natural healing resources are used in the operation of the clinic. Environmental quality indicators must meet the statutory requirements, territory must have an appropriate tourism infrastructure and development of the territory must be purposeful. Jūrmala has already established good tourism infrastructure with more than 43 tourism accommodations of different categories, more than 286 catering places, and provides comprehensive range of recreational and health services. Natural healing resources of Jūrmala are used for improving health and preventing diseases, as well as for rehabilitation and healing of various diseases.

Jūrmala City’s Spatial Plan for years 2010 to 2022, has individually labeled large areas of resort, where resort medical institutions are already operating, and new resort objects are also planned to be developed in this area.
