This year, on 4 May, the 25th Anniversary of the
Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, the massive
Independence Day Cycling Marathon will take place in Jūrmala. Only a
token fee of one euro will be charged for participation, and the
proceeds will go to the purchase of bicycles for the ‘Sprīditis’
orphanage in Jūrmala. The general
sponsor of the Jūrmala Independence Cycling Marathon is Vivus.lv; the
Jūrmala Town Council co-finances this healthy lifestyle event.
‘It is already a tradition that sports and healthy lifestyle enthusiasts from all over Latvia meet in Jūrmala. On
4 May, we encourage everyone to join us and celebrate the restoration
of our country’s independence by participating in this cycling
competition. You will spend you free time well and support children from
the orphanage’, Indra Brinkmane, the director of the Sports Authority of the Jūrmala Town Council, invited people to the event.

The organisers of the event encourage professional athletes as
well as those, for whom cycling is a hobby and a source of energy, to
participate in this competition. The selection of routes offer
will be suitable for anyone’s abilities; there will be a Sports Route
(~90 km), a Popular route (~45 km), a Family Route (~14 km) as well as a
special Children’s route. To participate, adults will have to pay the
token fee of one euro, while young children and schoolchildren will be
able to join the marathon free of charge.
‘An increasing number of people in Latvia consider the bicycle to be more than just a means of transportation. We are glad that we can make our contribution into promoting healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle. I encourage everyone to join this event,’ Toms Jurjevs, the executive director of Vivus.lv, said.
The organisers of the event at Alpha Baltic Sport, its general
sponsor Vivus.lv as well as the other sponsors have put together a
substantial prize fund: 15,000 euros. Money prizes will be issued
to those who take the first 10 places in the general standings on the
Sports or Popular route. Valuable surprises will be prepared for the
rest of the participants. Additionally, every hundredth participant of
the event will receive a special money prize.

Latvians of all ages. The Independence Day Cycling Marathon in Jūrmala will be a fun event for every family member, and for people of any age. We

More than 400 different scale sports events for healthy and
active lifestyle enthusiasts take place in Jūrmala every year, including
running, rowing, roller-skating and cycling marathons, the Beach
running festival, the Jūrmala Winter Sports Festival etc. For more than 10 years, Jūrmala has been proud to hold the Healthy city status awarded by the World Health Organisation. Moreover,
since 2014, Jūrmala has become the beach volleyball capital of the
Baltic States, being the location of the CEV Masters tournament, taking
place on 20—24 May.
