Massive Independence Day Cycling Marathon to take place on 4 May in Jūrmala

This year, on 4 May, the 25th Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, the massive Independence Day Cycling Marathon will take place in Jūrmala. Only a token fee of one euro will be charged for participation, and the proceeds will go to the purchase of bicycles for the ‘Sprīditis’ orphanage in Jūrmala. The general sponsor of the Jūrmala Independence Cycling Marathon is Vivus.lv; the Jūrmala Town Council co-finances this healthy lifestyle event.

‘It is already a tradition that sports and healthy lifestyle enthusiasts from all over Latvia meet in Jūrmala. On 4 May, we encourage everyone to join us and celebrate the restoration of our country’s independence by participating in this cycling competition. You will spend you free time well and support children from the orphanage’, Indra Brinkmane, the director of the Sports Authority of the Jūrmala Town Council, invited people to the event.

The organisers of the event encourage professional athletes as well as those, for whom cycling is a hobby and a source of energy, to participate in this competition. The selection of routes offer will be suitable for anyone’s abilities; there will be a Sports Route (~90 km), a Popular route (~45 km), a Family Route (~14 km) as well as a special Children’s route. To participate, adults will have to pay the token fee of one euro, while young children and schoolchildren will be able to join the marathon free of charge.

‘An increasing number of people in Latvia consider the bicycle to be more than just a means of transportation. We are glad that we can make our contribution into promoting healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle. I encourage everyone to join this event,’ Toms Jurjevs, the executive director of Vivus.lv, said.

The organisers of the event at Alpha Baltic Sport, its general sponsor Vivus.lv as well as the other sponsors have put together a substantial prize fund: 15,000 euros. Money prizes will be issued to those who take the first 10 places in the general standings on the Sports or Popular route. Valuable surprises will be prepared for the rest of the participants. Additionally, every hundredth participant of the event will receive a special money prize.

‘By organising this cycling competition, we continue supporting the idea of promoting healthy and active lifestyle among Latvians of all ages. The Independence Day Cycling Marathon in Jūrmala will be a fun event for every family member, and for people of any age. We invite you to come to this cheerful and inspiring event on 4 May to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence of Latvia, and —which is just as important— help the orphanage children be healthy and active in their daily lives,’ Lauris Špillers, the originator of the sports series and Alpha Baltic Sport director, told about the idea of the event.
