New Liepāja Concert Hall Lielais Dzintars to open in October

The beautiful city Liepāja, on the Baltic coast, known in Latvia as the city of winds and music, will finally have its long-awaited concert hall in the near future.

The concert hall Lielais Dzintars (Great Amber) will be a new, vivid accent in the architectonic image of the city, and tremendous opportunity for audiences to see acclaimed artists perform at the concert hall, known for its outstanding acoustic properties. The edifice will also offer new opportunities for the organisation of conferences and corporate events on a new, unprecedented level.

The new concert hall Lielais Dzintars has been designed by the renowned Austrian architect, Professor Volker Giencke, whose project won an international competition of designs for the concert hall. The building evokes associations with music captured in amber. The concert hall’s acoustics were designed by Professor Karl Heinz Miller (Germany), one of the greatest acousticians in the world. Lighting fixtures are by the company "Bartenbach" (Austria), the world’s leading lighting consultant, headed by the company’s founder, Professor Christian Bartenbach.

Volker Giencke commented: "We wish to give the city a new identity – cultural identity, and the concert hall will provide an excellent foothold for achieving this. I’m convinced that the development of the city, and the entire humanity, is only possible thanks to culture."

The Lielais Dzintars concert hall is a multifunctional centre that offers premises, equipment, qualified personnel, and services for the organisation of various events. The concert hall has five auditoria of various areas that are functionally adaptable for a great variety of cultural and art events, corporate events, banquets, conferences, lectures, etc.

The Great Hall is the largest one (1,169.5 m²), it will seat 350 to 1,010 (1,138 if the room for choristers is added). The hall can be adapted for concerts in various music genres, theatrical and dance performances, it is also suited for the organisation of congresses, conferences, receptions, and even hosting standing-room events.

The Chamber Hall has 200 seats, and the Experimental Stage Hall has room for 150. The multifunctional centre has a café and restaurant, which provide catering services on a daily basis and at special events.

Construction of the concert hall continued from 2013 to 2015. The eight-storey building has a total area of over 14,600 square metres. Reinforced concrete, metal, and glass were used in construction of the building. The sun-lit tower of the concert hall’s façade evokes visual associations with amber pieces that are sometimes washed ashore in Liepāja after a storm – or honey made by bees in the unspoilt nature of Latvia.

Lielais Dzintars will open in October. The one-and-a-half-month opening programme features a great diversity of concerts – classical music, jazz, and other music, performed by some of the greatest musicians from Latvia and abroad.
