In August, 286,627 passengers passed through Tallinn Airport, which is the highest number of passengers handled in a month since Autumn 2019. Compared to last year, the number of passengers grew by 61%. In the last eight months, 1.8 million passengers passed through the airport, which is three times more than in the same period last year.
According to the Member of the Board of AS Tallinna Lennujaam, Eero Pärgmäe, the employees of the airport have done their best to cope with the quickly rising passenger numbers. “The time spent in security check queue has also decreased with each month – 14 minutes in June, 11 minutes in July, 9 minutes in August. Of course, the queues are longer during peak hours and the waiting time could be up to an hour then. In the future, peak hours or so-called waves will still affect waiting times at the security check. For Tallinn Airport, these are early mornings, mid-days and evenings. We still advise you to arrive at the airport well in advance, so that you can have enough time to do everything you need to stress-free.”

The load factor for regular flights remained high at around 80% on average. Direct flights to Georgia were reopened in August, with twice-weekly flights to Khuthaisi by Wizz Air. In total, there were 35 regular routes, with most flights to important hubs, such as Riga, Stockholm and Helsinki. Antalya closely follows in terms of passenger numbers, mostly on charter flights. There were a total of 7 charter destinations, including resorts in Montenegro, Greece and Bulgaria.
The airline with the highest share in August was Air Baltic, with 13 direct flights accounting for 24% of all passengers. Ryanair accounted for 21% passengers with 15 direct flights.
“The peak travelling season shows no signs of slowing down. Cold weather pushes people to actively plan autumn trips and we can already see an uptick in ticket sales for the school holidays in October. This means that it is the time to make plans for upcoming holidays and school breaks, and also to start thinking about your ski trips,” says Pärgmäe.
The regional airport with the highest number of passengers was Kuressaare with 4,142 passengers in August. Kärdla Airport accounted for 1,486, Tartu Airport for 1,215 and Pärnu Airport for 319 passengers. The rise of passenger numbers in Kuressaare and Kärdla was supported by the popularity of domestic tourism. The new winter schedule will help raise the load factor on the Tartu-Helsinki route, as it will create much better opportunities for connecting flights. Seasonal lines from Pärnu to Helsinki and Stockholm have now come to an end. Pärnu-Helsinki line was used by 1,404 passengers and Pärnu-Stockholm line by 344 passengers during the season.
