Zaķusalas TV tower during the festival of light Staro Riga

In conjunction with this year’s Festival “Staro Riga” theme “Optical Illusions”, the lighting for the Riga Radio and TV Tower – the European Union’s tallest – will be augmented with special color combinations and previously unseen lighting effects during the Festival, which will take place November 18th-21st.

Considering the illumination equipment location, a unique additional visual effect will be achieved – the tower’s projection unto clouds. Based on the local climate in November (fog, precipitation), the tower’s optical illusions will likely be best viewed in the tower’s immediate vicinity.

The special lighting during the Festival “Staro Riga” will occur from 18:00-23:00, but on November 18th, the tower will be lit all night, until 8:00 the following morning.

During the Festival, the Riga Radio and TV Tower, which belongs to the Latvia State Radio and Television Centre, will be among the 14 urban light objects that will be lit every day.

During the winter period (from November 1st through February 28th) during normal operations, the tower is lit from 17:00 until midnight, but in the morning, while it’s still dark – from 7:00 until approximately 7:30 or 8:00. During the remainder of the year, the tower is lit in accordance with a specific schedule that is based on the time of sunrise and sunset. On Friday and Saturday nights and during holidays, the projectors operate an hour longer, until 01:00.

The tower’s daily illumination is achieved by means of lighting equipment that operates without colour filters. However, the Festival lighting will make use of lighting equipment that works with a CYAN filter, based on the RGB colour model.
