Ventspils Announces Tour Guide Certification Course

Ventspils Tourism Information Centre invites you to attend a city tour guide certification course to be held from March 14 to April 27 at the premises of the Lifelong Education Department of Ventspils University College (101a, Inzenieru Str., Building D).

Lessons will take place on Fridays from 4.00 pm to 8.00 pm (sometimes from 3.00 pm) and on Saturdays from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. Completing the course, in May each participant will receive a Ventspils tour guide certificate valid for a period of 3 years, i.e. until May 14, 2017. Guides planning to host tours in foreign languages are particularly welcome.

The course is aimed at promoting the popularity of Ventspils as a tourist destination and providing the tour guides willing to work in the administrative territory of Ventspils with detailed and accurate information about the city, its tourist attractions and sights. The panel of lecturers will include not only tourism professionals but also representatives of local government.

Ventspils tour guides will be able to ask questions to Aivars Lembergs, Chairman of Ventspils City Council, and go on a study tour to explore the newest sports, public, social and environmental projects of the city together with Didzis Osenieks, Deputy Chairman of Ventspils City Council. A number of study tours will introduce course attendees to the work of the Port Captain Service, buildings and architecture of Ventspils, Ventspils Museum's branches, Olympic Centre "Ventspils" facilities and companies operating under the auspices of the Freeport of Ventspils and Ventspils High Technology Park.

The programme will feature a course of lectures about Ventspils history and inhabitants read by the historian Ingrida Strumfa and Armands Vijups. Among the lecturers will be such well-known tourism professional as Dr. geogr. Andris Klepers (Vidzeme University College), who presented his latest book "Tūristu gids. Vietas pieredzējuma radīšana" ("Tourist Guide: Creating On-Site Experience") co-authored by his colleague Juris Smalinskis in January this year. The new tour guides will get advice from Iveta Rivane, Director of Travel Agency "Tobago" having over 20-year-long tour guide experience.

The course is organized by the Ventspils City Council for the fifth time in a row. In the past, Ventspils tour guide certificates were issued to 37 people in 2002, 63 people in 2004, 59 people in 2008 and 49 people in 2011.
