Visittartu.com: Mobility Week events bring fun, music, and adventure to Tartu’s urban space

Tartu will be celebrating the annual European Mobility Week from 16–22 September. A number of public events will be taking place across the city to mark the occasion, with the theme for this year’s European Mobility Week being ‘Shared Public Spaces’. Among other things bicycles will be used to discover new cycle tracks, and Comedy Estonia stand-up comedian Karl-Alari Varma will entertain people with mobility-themed humour at the party under the Sõpruse Bridge. Throughout mobility week, rides will be free for everyone on Tartu’s city buses. The right to travel free of charge applies to all passengers during Mobility Week, and a ticket does not have to be swiped at the on-board validators during this period. The purpose of the free ride is to encourage people to choose environmentally friendly modes of movement, thereby contributing to the creation of a cleaner and healthier urban environment.

On Thursday, 19 September at 17.00, the walking tour ‘Tartu’s Secret Shortcuts’ will take place, during which anyone interested can discover exciting secret paths in Tartu. Indrek Rannik, Head of the General Planning and Development Service, will serve as the guide for the hour-long leisurely walk from Toometaguse to Karlova and back to the city centre. The group will gather in front of the University of Tartu Library, with the walk ending on the Atlantis staircase on the banks of the Emajõgi River. Prior registration is not required for the event. On the same day, after the end of the walking group, a discussion session called ‘Street Space For All: A Nuisance Or Freedom?’ will begin at 18.00 on the Atlantis staircase. The first part of the two-part discussion introduces the concept of bicycle streets in Tartu. Jiri Tintera, the City Architect of Tartu, designer Indrek Oden, Age Poom, author of the UT mobility study, SEBE board member and former head of the Estonian Oil Association Mart Raamat, and the Tartu Cyclists Union will participate in a broader discussion on street space. All interested parties are welcome to participate.

On Friday, 20 September, there will be a joint bike ride ‘Exploring New Routes!’ The Tartu City Government and Cycling Tartu invite you to take an hour’s ride through Tartu in the autumn. Riders are expected to gather in the University of Tartu athletic building car park at 18.45, the column will start moving at 19.00 and will finish an hour later under the Sõpruse Bridge, on the Turu Street side. The route will include the soon-to-be-completed Põhja Avenue, which will open to all road users in mid-October. On the same evening, after the bike ride, a party called ‘Shared Bridge Space’ will take place under the Sõpruse Bridge. At 20.30, Comedy Estonia stand-up comedian Karl-Alari Varma will have the public laughing at mobility-related topics, and at 21.00 the party will start with a DJ. You can have something to eat there, while enjoying the pleasant hustle and bustle and urban space.

On Sunday, 22 September, European Mobility Week will end with a car-free day, encouraging you to leave your car at home and travel by foot, public transport, or bicycle. European Mobility Week started in 2002, and today more than 3,000 cities – including Tartu – take part in it every year.
