The Day of the Sun, a big celebration of the first anniversary of the Sun Museum that is the only museum in Europe dedicated to the sun, will take place on May 3, 2010 at the Town Hall Square of Riga. The celebration will be dedicated to the sun, the brightest star in the world, involving various exciting activities. In the framework of the celebration drawings of the sun made by visitors of the museum will be used to make the longest street of the sun in the world. The organizers of the celebration will apply for the inclusion of this event in the Guinness Book of World Records. During the celebration everyone will have an opportunity to lengthen the Street of the Sun by adding his or her own drawing, thus contributing to the creation of the world record.
“We are very pleased that the first Sun Museum in Europe, that opened its doors in Riga a year ago, has managed to inspire so many visitors. Historically Latvians have had various traditions in honor of the sun. To enhance the warmness and kindness of mutual relationships and to rejoice even more souls, we are introducing a new tradition: the celebration of the Day of the Sun. We are kindly inviting all of you to take part in this event,”
says Iveta Gražule, the creator and director of the Sun Museum.
The celebration of the Day of the Sun will start on May3, at 1p.m., and will last until 6p.m., when the measurements of the length of the street will be taken to define the scale of the record. In addition to the creation of the Street of the Sun the celebration will also involve the opening of the photo exhibition called “The Sun in the Architecture of Riga”, presenting photos of buildings located in Riga having the image of the sun represented on their facades.
Fans of the scientific approach will be invited to take part in lectures and discussions dedicated to the sun that will be provided by the Latvian Association of Astronomy. Moreover, they will have a chance to observe the sun through the StarSpace telescope of The Sun Observatory. The visitors will be invited to enjoy a concert by ensembles and folk-dance groups, as well as dances, games, competitions, quizzes, creative workshops and many other activities.
