In cooperation with the Estonia National Opera and the Estonian Public Broadcasting a party programme is being compiled that will please everyone, young and old – the legendary folk band Kukerpillid, rock favourite Tanel Padar & The Sun and IIRIS, who has turned the Estonian pop scene inside out.
„The opening ceremony of the Capital of Culture Tallinn 2011 is characterized by teamwork,“ says Jaanus Mutli, member of the board of Tallinn 2011 Foundation. „Simultaneously with the start of Capital of Culture we will also celebrate the introduction of the European joint currency, the Euro. No doubt, both these events affect everyone in Estonia.“
The Theatre Square will house „culture kiosks“ for one night and the outdoor screens will transmit the New Year’s Eve’s programme on Estonian TV. Through special screens people on the Theatre Square can be part of the Estonia Ball, the afterparty of the international theatre festival „A Winter Nights Dream“ in the City Theatre, also events going on in the NO99 Straw Theatre, New World Community and CAME (Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia) by the seaside. „As we are expecting special guests from far- far away, it is worth to head to the Theatre Square that night,“ hints Jaanus Rohumaa, the artistic director of the opening ceremony.
At midnight two spectacular fireworks will flare up over the brand new Capital of Culture – one from the roof of Solaris centre across the Estonia Opera house and another over the Bay of Tallinn. „The epicentre of the party is the Theatre Square but this is the night to party for the whole town. The first seaside story of our seashore Capital of Culture will be told 200 meters above the Bay of Tallinn,“ describes Rohumaa. It can be best enjoyed from Pirita Tee near the Russalka monument.
The opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture is being arranged by Tallinn 2011 Foundation, Estonia National Opera and Estonian Public Broadcasting in cooperation with Government Office, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, City of Tallinn, Bank of Estonia and Solaris. The artistic director of the party is Jaanus Rohumaa, producer Eva Saar, designer Liina Keevallik. Event management is being taken care of by Royal Service, Eventec and Meeskond.
