Consensus reveals the most typical Latvian dish

A consensus of local inhabitants and foreign tourists in a recent survey has named grey peas with chopped bacon as the "most typical" Latvian dish, followed by stewed sauerkraut.

The survey was conducted by the Rural Traveler ("Lauku ceļotājs") Association of Latvia.

Other Latvian specialties named were potatoes, carrot tarts, potato pancakes, herring, bread soup, "Rīgas balzams", cold beet soup, porridge, blood sausage, pork fillet and the small bacon-filled pastry known as pīrāgs.

"Lauku ceļotājs" reports that the number of persons embarking on country holidays in Latvia continued to grow this year, with the majority of foreign guests from Russia, followed by the Germans (whose numbers are once again increasing), and  the Lithuanians in third position. In the Top 10 also – tourists from Estonia, UK, the Netherlands and Poland.
