The 113th World Esperanto Congress Will Take Place in Kaunas in 2028

The Executive Board of the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA) is pleased to announce that the 113th World Esperanto Congress (UK) will take place in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 2028.

Following the 2027 congress in Melbourne (Naarm), the World Congress will return to Europe — and, for the first time since the 90th World Congress held in Vilnius in 2005, also to Lithuania and the Baltic region. This will be the first time the event is hosted in Kaunas.

Lithuania’s second-largest city and one of the leading cultural centers in the Baltic region, Kaunas offers visitors a unique blend of rich history and vibrant contemporary life. Located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, Kaunas served as the temporary capital of Lithuania during the interwar period and developed into an important center of culture, education, and modernist architecture. The city’s modernist heritage has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The choice of Kaunas also carries a special symbolic significance for the Esperanto movement. Kaunas is the birthplace of Klara Zamenhof (née Zilbernik), the wife of L. L. Zamenhof, creator of Esperanto, and one of the earliest and most important supporters of the movement. Without her support and dedication, the publication of the “Unua Libro” (“First Book”) would not have been possible. This historical connection gives the future congress a unique symbolic dimension and provides an opportunity to honor an important woman in Esperanto history.

The Esperanto movement in Lithuania has long and distinguished traditions. For decades, the Lithuanian Esperanto Association (LitEA) has actively contributed to international Esperanto activities, event organization, and cultural cooperation. UEA therefore enthusiastically accepted LitEA’s invitation to host the congress in Kaunas in 2028.

Kaunas offers modern and convenient infrastructure for an international event of this scale, including universities, conference venues, a lively cultural scene, a walkable city center, and extensive tourism opportunities. Congress participants will be able to enjoy historic neighborhoods, museums, concerts, green parks, and the unique atmosphere of a modern Baltic city.

A special registration discount will be available for participants who register for the 113th Congress in Kaunas during the 112th Congress in Melbourne in 2027. The same discount will also apply to participants registering for the 112th Congress during the 111th Congress, which will take place in Graz from August 1–8, 2026. The 113th Congress in Kaunas will also be presented and promoted during that event.

Further information regarding congress dates, venues, and registration will be announced later through the official communication channels of the Universal Esperanto Association and the official congress website.

Those wishing to register for the 111th Congress and benefit from the final discounted registration period (available until June 30, 2026) can visit: uk.esperanto.net

The Universal Esperanto Association sincerely thanks the Lithuanian Esperanto Association, local organizers, and partners who are already actively working to ensure that the 113th World Esperanto Congress in Kaunas becomes a successful and memorable event.
