Latvia: In six months passenger traffic by land and air increased, by ferries – decreased

In six months passenger traffic by land and air increased, by ferries – decreased

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data show that in H1 2024, compared to H1 2023, passenger traffic by train, bus, tram, trolleybus and aircraft has risen, but by regular bus traffic lines and ferries – reduced.

During H1 2024, the number of passengers carried by land passenger transport comprised 94.7 million passengers, which is 1.6 % more than in H1 2023.

The number of passengers carried by rail transport comprised 9 million, a rise of 9.7 %. The number of passengers carried by national transport rose by 9.4 %, but the number of passengers carried by international transport (due to the new route Vilnius-Riga) – 5.3 times.

50.5 million passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is 3 % less than a year ago. Number of passengers carried in national lines reduced by 3.1 %, but the number of passengers carried in international lines reduced – by 0.7 %.
The number of passengers carried by trolleybuses comprised 20 million passengers, a rise of 3.8 %, but by trams – 15.2 million passengers, a growth of 11.8 %.

In H1 2024, 154.2 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Ventspils and Liepāja ports with ferries. Their number has dropped by 10.1 %, compared to H1 2023. At Ventspils port passenger turnover comprised 111.3 thousand passengers, 16.4 % less, but at Liepāja port – 42.9 thousand passengers, which is 11.7 % more. Ferry traffic at Riga Passenger Terminal is closed since 2021.

In H1 2024 the number of passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport comprised 3.2 million, which is 3.7 % more than in H1 2023.
