Survey: Quality of Spa in Latvia is sufficient, though expensive

Results of a survey, made by tourism and spa industry experts, showed that the majority of respondents approved supply of spa centres in Latvia and considers them to be of sufficient quality, but the price level seems too high. The respondents admit that the economic situation has affected the habits of visiting spa recreational centres, and more and more campaigns and prices are considered the most important ones.

The received answers to the questions indicate that interest level in spa services is quite high in Latvia. More than half of the respondents is using spa services at least once a year, but regularly – several times a month – 10% of the respondents.

Although the majority of respondents considered various spa procedures and their quality in Latvia as adequate, still 60% believe that the prices are too high. 30% of the respondents consider spa services as acceptable. Majority of the respondents stated that they could afford to spend 50 LVL in a spa centre, considering it an optimal price, but they are not ready to part with more than 100 LVL.

Baltic Beach Hotel Sales Director Valdis Vanadziņš has said that results of the survey show that their implemented pricing policy is customer-oriented, and they have developed it successfully, because mainly the prices are 5-35 LVL. So these prices agree with desires of potential customers, and opportunities. Mr. Vanadziņš also noted that after a complete analysis of the results, they would continue to improve their supply, and be more forthcoming when it comes to clients.

Body wrap is recognized as the most favorite procedure. It is followed by aromatherapy and massage with volcanic stones. The most popular spa places in Rīga and Jūrmala were named Baltic Beach Hotel, Jūrmala Spa and Taka Spa, but in the regions – SPA Hotel Ezeri and Usma Spa.

Improving of one’s well-being and relaxation, as well as an opportunity to improve health and take care of one’s beauty is the main reason of having spa procedures.

However, the overall economic situation in the country influenced people's habits to a large extent, and the majority of the respondents admit that they are now paying greater attention to the prices, and they are trying to take advantage of various campaigns and special offers. Similarly, friends' recommendations also influence one’s desire to visit a spa centre.

“This recreational industry is a relatively new niche of services in Latvia that has the potential to grow. The survey confirmed that a flexible price and campaign policy would make this service even more attractive, therefore we will continue to work with the providers of spa service to create special offers to customers,” – sums up Irēna Riekstiņa, Kaleva Travel Director.

As it was informed, the tourism and spa industry experts carried out a survey in August on the Internet in order to obtain views on the supply of spa recreation centres in Latvia, price-quality ratio, the most popular procedures and the impact of the crisis on this category of service. The survey took place in a virtual environment – www.kalevatravel.lv and continued throughout August. 687 respondents, aged from 18 to 50 years were involved.

Organizers of the survey thank to all participants for their answers, and stress that the results of the survey will be used for making offers to spa lovers.

The survey was carried out by the travel agency Kaleva Travel, in collaboration with the leisure and spa service providers – Baltic Beach Hotel, ESPA, Mārcienas muiža, Dikļi Palace Hotel and Spa Hotel Ezeri.
