"Vilnius Heritage of Handicrafts" – reviving spirit of the capital's crafts

Vilnius opens the project “Vilnius Heritage of Handicrafts” to revive its old handicraft tradition, including twelve educational events, a two-day Bartholomew Fair and publication “Handicrafts in Vilnius: Tradition and the Present”. The project is part of the Living History Programme of “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009”.

To revive Vilnius old tradition of handicrafts, educational events will run once monthly in the historic locations of Vilnius handicraft shops. “Convention of the Tanner Mead Fraternity” on 31 January 2009 (Saturday) from 12 am to 5 pm in the square at the intersection of Visų Šventųjų, Karmelitų and Arklių streets, which marks the roots of Vilnius handicraft shops, will be followed by a presentation of the oldest and richest goldsmithery shop (in February), Vilnius tailoring shop (in March), the craft of smithery, shoemakers and curriers, and the weaving shop. There will also be the opportunity to visit woodworking workshops, Vilnius pottery shop and glazing workshop and watch how old Vilnius bookbinders work, and in the year’s last month to discover ancient cooking.
