New National Library hosts first in series of exhibits «To Flee and Return: WWI Experience»

The first exhibit (open September 19-November 16) will mark the 100th anniversary since the beginning of WWI.

Titled: "Bēgt un atgriezties: Pirmā pasaules kara pieredze" (To Flee and Return: WWI Experience), it is a story of 760,000 inhabitants, primarily from Kurzeme, forced to abandon their homes. Many re-located to Vidzeme, and many more ended up in Russian territory. Their return lasted from 1917 to mid-1920, but scores remained in the newly-established Soviet Russia. Focus is on the reality of returning, starting with treaties that set the legal basis for repatriation, and the stringent guidelines set by the Latvian Refugee Salvation Committee.

Books – fiction, non-fiction, biography, photo albums – about the WWI refugees, will be on special display.

In total, three exhibits in a three-year period, under the heading: "Emigrācijas viļņi no Latvijas teritorijas: simtgade" (Waves of Emmigration from Latvian Territory: 100 Years).

Hours
Monday-Friday: 9-20; Saturday-Sunday: 10-17.
